CClasses we offer

Tap/Jazz Combo Classes

Ages 7 & up

Our Tap/jazz combo classes are designed to introduce beginning to intermediate level dancers to two different styles of dance.

Tap dancing is an exciting form of dance in which dancers wear special shoes equipped with metal taps. Tap dancers use their feet like drums to create rhythmic patterns and timely beats.  The goal in tap dancing is to produce clear, clean sounds, with various levels of tone. The knees and ankles should be relaxed, and most of the dancing is done on the balls of the feet. Tap dancing is mastered through lots and lots of practice!

Jazz dancing is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. There are many different styles of Jazz – from Broadway Jazz to Classical Jazz to Jazz Funk, and more!  To excel in jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance.

Advanced Jazz

Ages 8 & up

with Teacher approval

This class is for the advanced dancer who has completed all the objectives of our tap/jazz combo class. Student must also be enrolled in ballet class.  We will focus proper jazz technique and improving performance quality.  Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street and Contemporary to help develop a well rounded dancer.

Ages 6 & up

This is a multi-level course.  Beginning levels are one class per week.  Advanced levels require multiple lessons per week, depending on level

Ballet: Is an artistic dance form performed to music using precise and highly formalized steps.  Classical ballet is characterized by light, graceful and fluid movements.  We expect students adhere to a strict dress code and proper classroom etiquette

Lyrical/Contemporary: Lyrical dance challenges dancers to use movement to interpret music and express emotion, therefore telling a story. Contemporary dance is for the more advanced students and fuses different styles.  A solid, ballet-based technique is an essential

component for both styles of dance.

Dancer must  also be enrolled in ballet class.

Ballet & Pointe

Ballet Ages 6 & up

Pointe ages 12 & up

with Teacher approval

Point is an extension of ballet dance that is performed at a higher level, with higher level students. Starting pointe work is a special milestone in a dancer's life! Dancing on your toes requires tremendous strength of the legs and feet. A dancer's body must have developed, structurally, to handle the requirements of pointe without injury.  We, at DDDS have strict requirements for starting pointe work. Dancer must also be enrolled in Ballet.

Hip Hop

Ages 6 & up

BB Hip Hop

Ages 3-5

In Hip-Hop classes at the Dianna Durkin Dance Studio, we use “clean”, age appropriate music and movements. Since Hip-Hop culture naturally encourages free-flowing, rhythmic, urban-style street dance, we guide students in creating their own identity. Although the movements are choreographed, we encourage students to make it their own, and express their own attitude. This is a high energy, fun class for students to let loose! Advanced levels require teacher approval.

Ages 7 & up

This course is designed to introduce Modern dance forms and techniques to multi-level students. We will learn about modern dance through physical practice, in-class discussions, group activities, and through attending performances. Modern dance is an art form developed at the turn of the 20th century, to express thoughts, feelings, and ideas that they felt other popular dance styles of the time (Vaudeville and Ballet) could not express. Modern dance has been an influence on popular dance forms such as Lyrical, Jazz, Musical Theatre, and Ballet (and vice versa). We will focus primarily on techniques that were developed by American Modern dancers and their students. Dancers must be enrolled in Ballet.

Broadway Dance

Ages 7 & up

This course is designed to introduce Broadway & Musical Theater dance forms and techniques to students of all levels. Musical Theater & Broadway dance styles emerged at the turn of the twentieth century in American when vaudeville side shows began to gain legitimacy as a true American art form. Broadway dance and Musical Theater has been an outlet for many choreographers and dancers from both Modern and Ballet. Broadway Musicals combine song and dance to tell an audience a story. Student must be enrolled in ballet.

Advanced Tap

Ages 8 & up

with Teacher approval

These classes are for the advanced dancer who has completed all objectives in our tap/jazz combo class.  We will be focusing on technique, progressions from basic steps, speed and clarity, across the floor, and center combinations.  An emphasis will be on  the dancer's performance skills.
